When most people think of “soap,” they picture the brightly packaged bars from the grocery store aisle. But here’s the truth: those bars usually aren’t soap at all — at least not anymore. They’re detergents, full of synthetic ingredients designed for foaming and shelf life, not for nourishing your skin.
In fact, most companies legally can’t even call their products “soap.” That’s why you’ll see them labeled as beauty bars, cleansing bars, or moisturizing bars. After all, if it’s made with the same stuff that cleans your laundry… do you really want to wash your skin with it?
Personally, I don’t even wash my laundry with it — but that’s a whole other rabbit hole.
And that’s why I started making my own cold process soap. What began as a way to care for my family’s skin has grown into a passion — and today, I want to share why cold process soap is so different, and so worth it.
What Is Cold Process Soap?
Cold process soap is the traditional method of soapmaking. It’s created by blending natural oils, butters, lye (we’ll dive into this in a future post), and liquids like goat milk or coconut milk. As they combine, a natural chemical reaction called saponification turns those ingredients into soap — and glycerin.
Here’s a little secret: big brands strip the natural glycerin out of their bars so they can sell it back to you in lotions. (Yep — they dry your skin out, then sell you the fix.) Cold process soap keeps that glycerin right where it belongs, giving you a bar that cleanses gently while helping lock in moisture.
Skin Benefits of Cold Process Soap
So what does this mean for your skin? Quite a lot:
Moisturizing & Non-Drying – Natural glycerin and nourishing fats stay in the bar, leaving your skin soft and hydrated instead of tight and itchy.
Gentle Cleansing – Washes without stripping away your skin’s protective oils, keeping your moisture barrier intact.
Preserves Natural Ingredients – Because the soap isn’t cooked at high heat, the benefits of oils, clays, and botanicals are preserved.
Customizable – Every recipe can be tailored: goat milk for creaminess, clays for gentle detox, essential oils for aromatherapy.
Free from Harsh Chemicals – No synthetic detergents, preservatives, or petroleum derivatives that can cause dryness or irritation.
Beyond Skin: Other Benefits
The perks don’t stop with your skin:
Eco-Friendly – Made in small batches with biodegradable ingredients, cold process soap leaves a lighter footprint.
Long-Lasting – A well-cured bar is hard, slow to melt, and gives you many washes.
Beautiful & Unique – From swirls and layers to natural textures, every bar is a little piece of art.

Of course, to really appreciate what makes handmade soap so special, it helps to understand what’s in the bars lining most store shelves.
What’s in Store-Bought “Soap”?
Flip over the package on most commercial bars and you’ll find:
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – a harsh foaming agent that strips natural oils.
Preservatives & Fillers – added for shelf life, not for your skin’s benefit.
Petroleum By-Products – cheap ingredients that coat rather than nourish.
It’s no surprise these bars leave skin so dry you end up reaching for lotion — conveniently sold by the same companies.
Why I Make Soap
For me, soapmaking is personal. I wanted something safe and gentle enough for my kids’ skin — something I could trust because I made it with my own hands. Today, I craft each bar with grass-fed tallow, goat milk, natural clays, and either essential oils or phthalate-free fragrances, depending on your preferences.
It’s more than just soap — it’s care, comfort, and a little touch of everyday luxury for my family… and now, for yours too.
In Closing
Cold process soap may take more time and patience to create, but the benefits are worth every step. It’s real soap, made with real ingredients — and once you try it, you’ll notice the difference on your skin.
